Questions & Answers

Why choose an Armadillobox instead of a standard metal shed?

Armadilloboxes are purpose-built for motorcycle and mobility scooter storage rather than lightweight garden sheds.

We use heavy-duty 1.2mm galvanised steel, fully vented construction and reinforced fabrication methods to create a rigid, secure building designed for real-world use.

Why do Armadilloboxes use 1.2mm galvanised steel?

Security and rigidity come first.

Many lightweight sheds use thinner steel, whereas Armadilloboxes use heavy-duty 1.2mm galvanised steel to create a stronger, more rigid structure once assembled.

The galvanised coating also helps provide long-term protection against weather and corrosion.

Are Armadilloboxes secure?

Yes.

Our units are designed with security in mind using reinforced construction and heavy-duty locking systems.

We also offer upgraded lock options, with doors and frames designed to resist common attack methods often associated with lighter sheds.

For additional security, Diamond-rated ground anchors are also available.

Do I need a concrete base?

No.

Armadilloboxes do not require a concrete base.

Our structural base and floor system allows installation on suitable grass, gravel or hard-standing surfaces, provided the ground is reasonably level and free-draining.

Many storage buildings claim to be strong but still require a full concrete slab. Armadilloboxes are designed differently, allowing installation in locations where traditional sheds may not be suitable.

Another consideration is that some planners may view permanent concrete bases differently to movable structures, so avoiding extensive groundwork can sometimes be beneficial.

If unsure, send photos of the proposed location and we can advise.

Will my motorcycle fit?

Usually yes, although width is often more important than length.

Panniers, wider handlebars and touring accessories can all affect fit.

Send us your motorcycle make and model and we will advise on suitable sizing.

Are Armadilloboxes ventilated and do they suffer from condensation?

Yes.

Ventilation is important for motorcycles and mobility scooters.

Our units are designed with ventilation in mind to help reduce stale air and minimise condensation risks often associated with sealed storage.

Should I choose the wide door option?

This depends on your bike and future needs.

The wide door option on our standard unit is often popular with touring bikes, wider handlebars and customers wanting easier access.

Many customers also choose it to future-proof the unit for future bike changes.

Can the doors be barred open?

Our door and locking design differs from many traditional sheds.

Heavy-duty construction and van-style locking systems help resist common forced-entry methods used against lighter metal or timber buildings.

Further questions

What is the standard Armadillobox size?

A common size is 8ft x 4ft (2438mm x 1200mm), with heights up to approximately 6ft.

We also fabricate larger and bespoke sizes to suit different motorcycles, mobility scooters and storage requirements.

Can I order a bespoke size?

Yes.

Bespoke fabrication is a large part of what we do.

If standard sizes do not suit your motorcycle or available space, contact us with dimensions and we can discuss suitable options.

Are Armadilloboxes suitable for mobility scooters?

Yes.

We manufacture storage specifically suited to mobility scooters and can advise on sizing, access and charging considerations.

Can I store tools, helmets and riding gear inside?

Yes.

Many customers use their Armadillobox for more than motorcycle storage, adding shelving and organisation for helmets, tools, chargers and riding equipment.

Riding clothing can also be stored, although during colder winter months we recommend airing jackets and textiles periodically rather than leaving damp clothing stored long term. This helps maintain freshness and avoid moisture build-up.

Can I install electrics or lighting?

Yes.

Many customers add lighting, charging points and electrical supplies.

We recommend electrical work is carried out safely and by a qualified electrician where appropriate.

Do I need planning permission?

Most customers do not require planning permission.

However, planning rules vary depending on location, size and placement.

As Armadilloboxes do not require permanent concrete foundations and can be relocated, this may sometimes be beneficial, although we always recommend checking with your local authority if unsure.

Do Armadilloboxes help with motorcycle insurance?

Many insurers value secure motorcycle storage and some customers report insurance benefits after installing an Armadillobox.

Armadilloboxes are designed with security in mind using heavy-duty construction, reinforced locking systems and optional Diamond-rated ground anchors.

Insurance requirements and discounts vary between insurers and individual policies, so we recommend checking directly with your provider.

Do you offer pallet delivery

Yes.

Most pallet deliveries are kerbside only and handled via pallet network.

Tail-lift vehicles are normally used and someone must be available to receive inspect and sign for the goods.

Assembly instructions are supplied for self-build deliveries.

Do you offer assembly?

Yes.

When we are able to deliver ourselves, assembly is included.

Assembly availability depends on location we are based in Bournemoth so please ask when enquiring.

If you are a good distance away pallet self assembly is more cost effective

Do we deliver fully built, No we assemble on site free of charge

Units are panel construction which means that they can be taken down and relocated should your circumstances change, For rear gardens with limited access if you can get a bike in we can get a unit in, there fixed together using high tensile nuts and bolts not self tappers or worse riveted so can be taken down as many times as you like.

How long does it take? What is a lead time?

This all depends on how busy the Workshop is, usually its 3 to 4 weeks made and delivered shorter for pallet delivery (this extends at peak season) . Once you place an order its a deposit and you go onto the fabrication list of orders that have been placed before yours,  units are bespoke and can change in size or complexity from the customers initial order, this may shift the timelines forward or back it is one of the reasons we cant give exact time frames as its constantly being updated.

Whats Galvanising

Created a page that goes into detail http://armadilloboxes.co.uk/galvanise/

I already have a ground anchor

No problem we can cut metal floor and wood subfloor (free of charge)  to enable unit to sit over the top so you can use any ground anchor you wish concrete it in and we will accommodate it, we do need notice so we bring the right tools.

Do we take credit card payment

We can arrange this facility as it helps our customers spread the cost, We do prefer cash or payment direct to bank as these carry no bank charges and are fraud free. We do not take card payments via our website so carry no risk of data being hacked.

Can they be bolted down?

Yes every box has a galvanised steel floor that can be screwed through to secure (Wooden floor units still have the steel base please see wooden floor page) However when you consider the standard M/C units are substantial and weigh in at around 34 stone without the wooden floor motorcycle or scooter its not going to be moved.

Update we recently moved a competitors shed and was shocked at just how light these are no wonder these need bolting down they weigh about the same as our door. Because our units are substantial in their own right we do not provide a fixing down service this needs a different set of tools and a pre assembly visit to examine substrate so better done by local trade person or yourself if you still think its necersary.

Can they be painted?

Yes we recommend Hammerite smooth goes on easily with a roller one coat usually does it Painting is only for looks not necessary for weather protection the boxes look impressive best to just let them alone

Do we paint them?

No it’s much better done on site anything done through the workshop has the overheads of the workshop on plus we may scratch it and you will paint over bolt heads.

How do I pay?

We take your details and the box details we then email or post an invoice which also acts as a receipt so you can confirm details.  We then need a deposit by cheque or direct to bank to take it as a confirmed order and book into our workshop, remainder is payable cash on delivery or direct to bank or credit card.
